Loosing the ability to see the world clearly is a problem many people face on a daily basis, there are many reasons why a person’s sight can fail such as genetics, age and specific conditions that affect the vision. Some of the conditions that affect a person’s ability to see clearly are myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia.
People who would like to recover their vision can do so in a safe way by undergoing a procedure which is called LASIK surgery, this type of non-intrusive surgery deals with the retina and corrects its curvature in order to help images focus exactly at the center of the retina. The procedures used in a LASIK surgery were originally developed in two countries: Colombia and Russia. The procedures that were used in order to correct the curvature of the cornea have been perfected over time and we now know such surgery as LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis). Let’s describe some of the conditions that affect vision to provide a better picture of the reasons why a person may undergo this procedure.
Myopia is a condition that is also referred to as nearsightedness, people who suffer from myopia are said to have an eye shape which is too long or the curvature of the cornea is too extreme, when any of these conditions is present, the light that goes through the cornea doesn’t quite make it to the retina so the focal point forms before it reaches the center of the retina.
Hyperopia is the contrary of myopia in the sense that the shape of the eye might be too short or the curvature of the cornea may not be enough to create a good focal point. In this case the light that goes through the cornea creates a focal point that is behind the retina.
Astigmatism occurs when the cornea is not properly shaped and the light that goes through it can not focus on the retina.
People who suffer from any of these conditions may choose to have a LASIK surgery in order to correct the problem without having to use contact lenses or glasses.
The Post-LASIK Dry Eye Condition
While the entire LASIK operation is virtually painless this doesn’t mean that there hasn’t been any changes in the tissues inside the patient’s eye, the fact is that the tissue that has been reshaped in order to focus images properly needs time to heal. A side effect of the operation may sometimes include infection and dry eyes; infectious can be prevented in a very easy way by just taking antibiotics but the most common side effect is the condition known as dry eyes.
The normal function of the glands that secrete tears is partially interrupted because of the surgery, this makes patients feel as though as if they had sand inside their eyes, while this is not a serious case it can be quite annoying. In order to solve this problem, ophthalmologists often recommend artificial tears, special eye-drops and moisturizers that will help ease the discomfort while the patient tear glands heal.
After undergoing this painless operation a patient may suffer from dry eye for a period of up to six months.
Dr. Horsley is Cornea fellowship trained and Lasik board certified by the American Board of Eye Surgeons, (http://www.aces-abes.org) in addition to being Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Other refractive surgeries performed at the Horsley Eye Center are Conductive Keratoplasty, (to restore reading vision after 40), clear lens exchange, (for sever hyperopia), and the intra ocular contact lens or ICL for extremes of myopia untreatable by laser refractive procedures.
Besides doing all the LASIK procedures for the LASIK Vision Institute, Dr. Horsley also treats his own private patients from his private office in Stoneham. The private patients are all treated EXCLUSIVELY on the VISX STAR 4 laser with active track 3-D eye tracking and WaveScan WaveFront System. The tracker can measure and incredible five times for each pulse of the laser, and shuts the laser off in a 50th of a millisecond should movement exceed the trackers range of motion, the computer that directs the laser remembers where it left off, so the procedure can resume without any adverse effect if the patient needs to cough or sneeze or just inadvertently moves.
Many have read in the lay press of so called SUPER VISION, besides basic optical errors, (standard spero-cylindrical), all of us have some non-standard optical aberrations, (spherical, comma, trefoil), that degrade our vision. With the WaveScan WaveFront System and the Visx CustomVue Platform, these aberrations can be measured and corrected, greatly enhancing the basic optical correction. Each of us has a WaveFront finger print so to say, that can be customized on an individual basis for a refined personalized treatment. The human retina has a resolving capability of around 20/10 vision, but is seldom achieved due to these optical aberrations. The WaveScan WaveFront System has lead to a statically significant improvement in our corrections, many patients actually achieving better than 20/20 vision, in the 20/15-20/10 range.

The average cost of LASIK surgery varies, depending on various factors, and the prices are always quoted per eye. The prices normally quoted are indicative, as the actual cost will depend on your requirement for more extensive correction or more follow-up after the surgery. Though you may find LASIK surgeries advertised for $500, they are not performed, under any circumstances, for less than $1000 per eye.
The average cost of LASIK surgery has been rising regularly, mainly because of the introduction of newer technologies and surgical procedures. Also, various surgeons perform different types of pre-operative tests, pushing up the cost of LASIK.
New Technologies and Cost of LASIK With the advent of newer technologies, the average cost of LASIK surgery has gone up. LASIK with IntraLase is much more expensive than LASIK with Microkeratome. In the IntraLase procedure the LASIK flap is created by a laser, where as in Microkeratome, the surgeon wields a fine blade to carry out the procedure. By using just this technology, the average cost per eye increases by $350.
There is a wide variation in the cost of equipments used for testing and operating. Technologies and equipment for tear film analysis, tracking, and measurements of corneal thickness, corneal topography, as well as the excimer laser itself, are available at varying prices, and this reflects on the average cost of LASIK surgery. The fee for refractive surgery includes:
- Lease and maintenance of the laser, microkeratome, corneal ring segments and other equipment that may be required.
-Microkeratome blades, medication, gowns, masks, gloves and other items used during surgery.
- Royalty to the excimer laser manufacturer towards cost of development.
- Royalty for the procedures used, depending on the laser manufacturer.
- Overhead for the office and surgical staff salaries, rent, office equipment, and office administration.
- The surgeon’s fee.
- Insurance.
- Other miscellaneous expenses.
Today, the average cost of LASIK surgery per eye, is around $2000 to $2500, depending on the condition of your affliction, the procedures to be followed, the pre-surgery tests, surgery, and re-surgery, if required. Discuss the total costs involved with your ophthalmologist, before deciding on the surgery.

In the most simple of scientific terms short sight is where the image created by your eye focuses in front of the retina, where it would focus with perfect vision. Using curved lenses in contacts or glasses the focus point of the image can be focused in the correct point. It’s also possible to have laser surgery to reshape the cornea to get the focus more accurate.
There are several different types of short sight or Myopia which are often categorised in the following ways.
Simple myopia is the most usual of the different types of short sight. In these cases the sufferer simply has that is too long for its optical power or too powerful for its length. It can either be genetically passed down or can be caused by environmental factors like excessive close use of the eyes.
Degenerative myopia, is short sight which gradually or drastically deteriorates over a period of time. It is usually characterized by fundus changes & high refractive errors which can sometimes include Posterior Staphyloma. It seems to be more common in certain races & culture such as Japanese, Chinese, Arab & Jewish.
Nocturnal myopia, not surprisingly refers to a condition which affects those who suffer from bad eye sight at night or in low light conditions. For those suffering from this condition may often have perfect vision in daylight but their eye has difficulty dealing with focusing in the dark.
Pseudomyopia is another problem which causes problems focusing on anything in the distance which is caused by a spasm with the ciliarly muscle.

For those of us who have to put up with them, glasses and contacts are essentially one thing: a pain. Hinges break, lenses get scratched, contacts rip, and often infections fester. Sound like fun? Well, it’s not. Indeed, it’s avoidable. A substantial number of Americans suffering from vision correction can be cured, so to speak. in a matter of minutes and days.
Dr. Tom Tooma, an eye surgeon and specialist practicing in Newport Beach, California, has made a name for himself mastering the LASIK vision correction method. By utilizing a medical laser, a trained surgeon, like Dr. Tooma, can permanently correct the vision of anyone who meets the surgery’s requirements. Eligibility can be determined by a quick, painless appointment. He has corrected the vision of more than 60,000 patients since the mid-1990s. His intimate knowledge of the process has resulted in various improvements and breakthroughs concerning the LASIK procedure. Indeed, his research and guidance helped LASIK garner FDA approval.
He was the first doctor in California to perform LASIK surgery and the first to perform Custom Wavefront Guided LASIK. In fact, it is contended that he has performed more CustomLASIK procedures with the Alcon LadarVision laser than any surgeon in the world. Moreover, Dr. Tooma was the first doctor in the world to use the Femtosecond Laser (IntraLase FS30). Using the IntraLase laser rather than the blade (microkeratome) makes the procedure safer and more precise, and increases the chance of 20/20 or better vision.
In addition to LASIK procedures, Dr. Tooma also performs radical new procedures that utilize radio waves. Incredibly, this correction procedure takes only 3 minutes and entails the reshaping of the cornea. Known in medical circles as keratoplasty, most patients feel no discomfort and can resume their daily activities almost immediately.
The surgery carried out by Thomas Tooma has become very popular and over a million people suffering from vision problems benefit from LASIK surgery. As its popularity grows, more and more people with vision problems will say goodbye to their glasses and contacts for good.
